Dovecot Pro v3.1.5

This is a minor release of the Dovecot Pro v3.1.x branch, which contains security fixes and bug fixes.

Known Issues

  • Deploying Dovecot Pro Palomar Controller with docker-compose is experimental.
  • The approximate user count shown in some Dovecot Controller UI views and in doveadm cluster backend list is not always updated correctly. A crashed or recovered backend may appear to have more active users than it actually does.

Dovecot ​

Security ​

  • DOV-9272: Submission: Login service crashes with panic once mail_max_userip_connections limit is reached.
  • DOV-9274: IMAP LIST command could be used to cause excessive CPU usage.
  • DOV-9275: Messages with a huge number of From/To/Cc/etc email addresses could result in excessive memory usage.
  • DOV-9280: The SMTP outbound dot-stuffing mechanism does not properly escape dots following a bare \r in message bodies, potentially allowing spoofed emails via malicious end-of-DATA injection.
  • DOV-9281: IMAP THREAD command could have used excessive amount of CPU processing a single email with a massive number of Message-IDs in References header.
  • DOV-9282: IMAP THREAD command could have used excessive amount of CPU processing emails with a large number of specially crafted Message-IDs in References header. The fix requires a new dovecot.index.thread file format, which is enabled only after setting dovecot_storage_version = 3.1.6 or newer. This rebuilds the index, so it will cause some extra CPU usage and extra metacache disk IO usage. It shouldn't cause (much) extra object storage IO, because all the fields should be coming from dovecot.index.cache.
  • DOV-9283: ManageSieve crashes with a panic when it receives input containing a lone CR character.
  • DOV-9284: Invalid IMAP command sent to imap-hibernate process might crash it.
  • DOV-9286: Sieve editheader has use-after-free bug, potentially allowing remote code execution attack.
  • DOV-9287: Sieve editheader could be used to leak memory contents into an email. This might contain other users' sensitive data, or a way to bypass ASLR for remote code execution attacks.
  • DOV-9288: Doveadm password length or API key length could still be determined via timing based attacks.
  • DOV-9346: When IMAP COMPRESS=DEFLATE was enabled, an attacker could send mails into a victim's mailbox and observe network traffic to determine whether a secret message matched a known string by comparing compressed response sizes (a CRIME-style attack). The fix resets the compression dictionary after each IMAP command, preventing information from leaking between commands.
  • DOV-9348: XCLIENT FORWARD command from login_trusted_networks could have been used to cause login processes to crash.
  • DOV-9350: Add default for sieve_max_cpu_time to prevent unbounded resource usage.
  • DOV-9353: Fix potential crash when using Sieve include extension.
  • DOV-9354: If URLAUTH is enabled, sending an invalid IMAP URLFETCH can result in an untagged NO response containing uninitialized memory, potentially leaking sensitive data.
  • DOV-9355: An authenticated user could crash the managesieve process by sending a Sieve script containing a very large numeric literal. This might be able to be used for remote code execution.
  • DOV-9421: SQL escaping would silently fall-back to non-multibyte aware escaping if SQL connection wasn't available. This could allow uncommon character sets to bypass escaping.
  • DOV-9426: If multiple OAUTH scopes were required, then this could have been only partially enforced with certain configurations.
  • DOV-9427: In oauth2, scope/aud checking was done with JWT tokens. Now it requires all scopes.
  • DOV-9443: Sending IMAP COMPRESS package containing zero-length frames crashes imap or imap-login process.
  • DOV-9460: Using lda_mailbox_autocreate = yes and lda_mailbox_autosubscribe = yes bypassed ACL restrictions on shared/public folders with Sieve "fileinto" command.
  • DOV-9463: Sieve resource usage (sieve_max_cpu_time) was tracked in the active Sieve binary. Switching to a different active binary could have been used to reset (bypass) the resource usage.
  • DOV-9534: Using IMAP COMPRESS ZSTD command can cause excessive memory usage in imap-login process, possibly making it reach service_vsz_limit and kill all the connections being served by the process. Fixed by disabling COMPRESS command with all other compression algorithms than the standard DEFLATE.
  • DOV-9535: Pre-login IMAP ID command could have used excessive amount of memory, causing the process to become killed and disconnecting all the other IMAP connections being proxied by the process. Or alternatively it could have caused excessive CPU usage, slowing down all the other IMAP connections being proxied by the process.

Changes ​

  • DOV-9463: When Sieve resource limit was reached, the Sieve script was disabled until it was re-uploaded or recompiled. Changed now to be disabled only until sieve_resource_usage_timeout is reached, and then automatically enabled again.

Fixed Issues ​

  • DOV-9272: If submission backend failed due to reaching mail_max_userip_connections, submission proxy immediately retried multiple times.
  • DOV-9463: ManageSieve did not delete old Sieve binary svbin files after DELETESCRIPT or RENAMESCRIPT. This could have allowed filling the filesystem with untracked files.
  • DOV-9567: IMAP: Fetching message body (via Dovecot proxy) may have sometimes caused the connection to hang or CPU busy loop.
  • DOV-9578: anvil process may start to use 100% CPU after kicking a connection if the target process dies at the same time.
  • DOV-9608: imap: When a multiplexed stream gets closed a crash could happen.
    • Fixes: Panic file ostream-multiplex.c: line 518 (o_stream_multiplex_try_destroy): assertion failed: (!mstream->parent_corked)
